Gryphon's Word of the Day, February 5, 2008

The word of the day for February 5, 2008 is "bacchanal" — noun1 a: orgy 2. b: orgy 3. 2 a: a devotee of Bacchus; especially : one who celebrates the Bacchanalia. b: reveler.

Happy Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras, Carnivale, Fat Tuesday or whatever the name you have for the party today. It is raining here with a promise of freezing rain turning to snow. No wonder the ancient Romans thought February was a bad luck month. This mind set was so engrained that no one protested when Julius Caesar took a day from the end of February to make his month, July, 31 days long. Nor did they protest when Augustus followed suit to make his month another day longer. That didn't stop the dinking around with February; this is Leap Year, so we have an extra day of misery. It's that darn groundhog's fault for seeing his shadow: six more weeks of winter. Of course, if he hadn't it would only have been a month and a half.

Although this photo was actually taken in autumn, I thought a little revelry was in order for today. This is Tuck, Cyb and Ryan taken about six years ago September at Bonner Springs Renaissance Faire. My sister and I (I was going to say organised, but there wasn't any organization to it) sponsored a visit to the Faire. We all had a great time.

Perfect picture for today, Jan!  While I appreciate the warmer days we have had, I'm beginning to suffer from whiplash (figuratively speaking) from the up & down temperatures & storms.  Missed work on Thursday last...when the schools are closed, our office is also closed.

That is what I could never understand with Groundhog day.  Horrible if he sees his shadow, but better if he doesn't?  Now granted I am just a lowly English major with a limited amount of math and algebra, but don't those add up to the same amount of days???  Grandma never could explain this very well to me.  (Of course, she got annoyed with many of my questions like this.)

We are having Jambalaya for dinner tonight, but that is as much of Mardi Gras that I have planned.  (Though HyVee, the regional grocery chain, was selling King Cakes this weekend.)

Don't know what happened there. I must have hit the send button twice. Anyway--I copied this comment from the second.

Looks like a perfect picture in honor of today....The weather most certainly feels like a celebration, odd as it may be I'm out in the yard in a hoody. It's early Feb. I don't have mittens, hat, scarf, woolly coat on...hmmm tis strange weather indeed here in NY. (Hugs) Indigo

Look at the sunshine lighting up Cybils face in the shade...just look!
Sigh!  I can't wait to bask in the warmth again Jan.  Oh halcyon days...hurry along then I can enjoy a bacchanalian romp in the woodlands behind our house in celebration...only joking of course.  I haven't got the joints to romp or orgy about indoors, let alone in the woods.   hahahahaha!  Just joining in your little bit of fun today.
Stay well
Hugs
