The word of the day for May 11, 2008 is "imperfection" — noun — : the quality or state of being imperfect; also : fault, blemish.
My sister and I were decrying modern times—O tempore, O mores. People today seem to dislike themselves. They want to be someone else. They want to be thought "mad, bad and dangerous to know." At the same time, they don't want anyone to think that they are "different" or crazy. When creating cards in her friend Betty's craft class, my sister deliberately changes things to suit herself. Others in the class get upset that Sis's efforts aren't exactly like the examples. Betty tells the others that it's all right. If they want identical cards, they should buy them from Hallmark.
My friend Monae of Sometimes A Sigh Says It All..... is the real inspiration for this word. She was termed "silly" by someone whom she values—as though silly is a bad thing. I believe that a certain amount of silliness is necessary in this world. It's both the innocence that brings us to Heaven and the non-linear thinking known as genius. It's the joke that keeps us from slipping into despair and the harbinger of hope. So, Monae, keep on being silly. Gift the rest of us with the imperfection of innocent enjoyment of the world.

I tend to agree with your statement about wanting to be different but not wanting to be acknowledged or thought of as such. It's the same with people who crave popularity but look with scorn upon those who acheive it. I know people who love a TV show or band just until they become popular, and then dump them. I don't get it.

I am glad that like me you said to Monae to keep on being silly if she feels like it..no one should be made to feel different...for any reason...and well I know that..well I might be different from most folks but am I really any different ? It is the same when these people refer to me or other people who may be perceived as being disabled...You are so Brave !!...brave my as !! we have no choice..now if I had a choice of being ..brave,,then that would be different altogether..imperfect we may be...we are ALL that in one way or another. Humans are so arrogant...we assign imperfect definitions of "normal" then humiliate people who do not fit those made up definitions! As a person who helps adults learn to read, I hear sad stories daily from adults who still carry the wounds from childhood because they did not learn the same way their classmates did.
Let us learn to be kinder to one another & suspend judgment until we can see our own imperfections as normal for us.
Dogs & children are the best when it comes to being authentic until we humiliate them out of their authenticity.
I've been labeled "crazy" and "different" all my life. The lesson I learned from it all is most of the people who labeled me are repressed and depressed. I am comfortable with who I am so labels do not bother me.
